June 15, 2011
One of the most talented vocalists of modern jazz will be performing at Dazzle this Friday, June 17, at 7 and 9 p.m. Sachal Vasandani will be performing with his group, featuring David Wong (bass), Jeb Patton (piano) and Kendrick Scott (drums).
Sachal is currently on tour in support of his new album Hi-Fly, which will be available on June 21. His music shows a distinctive blend of both jazz and pop, and the new album is an exciting mix of standards, originals and pop covers. One of the high points on the album is a song, “One Mint Julep,” which he recorded with the legendary Jon Hendricks.
I had the opportunity to interview Sachal and I asked him what it was like to work Hendricks. He said that the experience was “fantastic, and it inspired [him] in so many ways.” His enthusiasm about working with Hendricks really shined through. He said that Hendricks is “a brilliant musician who has inspired the world.”
When asked about his earliest influences, he states, “Mozart, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald.” Sachal began playing music in his teen years, and knew that’s what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He is a very talented individual who not only is a vocalist, composer and arranger, but he also plays the piano and the French horn.
Hailing from Chicago, Sachal moved to New York City after college. He started performing at local New York jazz clubs and made his major debut onto the jazz scene in 2007 with his first album, Eyes Wide Open. He is a 2010 DownBeat magazine “Rising Star” poll winner, and Hi-Fly is his third Mack Avenue release. He is a versatile singer who can surely satisfy any true jazz fan.
He is definitely looking forward to his performance as Dazzle, as this will be his first time performing there. I asked him what his favorite song to perform live is and he told me that all of his songs “are all my little children.” At the present time, he stated that the song “The Very Thought of You” is a very fun song to perform live, and is a special song to him.
As an artist, I wanted to know what his most memorable moment was up to this point in his career. He said that it is “hard to say” and that he just wants to “share his music, and enjoy every step.” Undoubtedly, there will be many moments in his musical future that he will soon not forget. This young, talented artist has many wonderful moments to look forward to
